Our L.A. Galaxians: Why a Live Game is More Fun

It was a sad day for Southern California soccer fans when LA Galaxy lost 3-0 to the San Jose Earthquakes, at the Calfornia Clasico on June 29, 2019.

Over 600 fans traveled to Stanford Stadium in support of L.A. Galaxy. Adorned with white, blue, and gold, Herbalife sponsored jerseys, the tiny section of Galaxy supporters seemed outnumbered as they formed approximately 1/16th of the stadium.

The spirit that they brought, however, was stadium-sized. Armed with only a megaphone and a drum, supporters began chanting about thirty minutes before kickoff and did not stop for the duration of the game. Ten minutes into the game the Earthquakes scored the first goal. The chanting was relentless. It seemed supporters wanted to make sure the Galaxy team knew someone was rooting for them.

We love ya, we love ya, we love ya

And everywhere you go

we’ll follow, we’ll follow, we’ll follow

Cause we support L.A., L.A., L.A.

And that’s the way we like it, we like it, we like it

Ohhh… Ohhhh… Ohhh… Ohhhh

By half time (45 minutes into the game) Galaxians appeared to be losing steam, as the chanting began to lower in volume and power. At 82 minutes, when the Earthquakes scored a second goal, the traveling caravan of Galaxy supporters got their second wind. I half expected them to be upset with the team for not having scored a goal so far into the game, but this was not the case. These supporters continued to chant tirelessly hoping to inspire their beloved L.A. players.

“Dale dale dale Galaxy!

Dale dale dale Galaxy!

Daleeeeee Los Angeles!”

When the Earthquakes scored the third goal five minutes before the end of the game, it was clear the Galaxy had no chance of winning. Still, the supporters continued on singing, never losing hope.

“Me siento muy contento, me siento muy feliz.

Hoy es dia de fiesta voy a ver a Galaxy!

Ohhh ohhh… Ohhh ohhh.”

Some supporters seemed not to even watch the game but were more concerned with engaging others to chant along. Galaxians truly uphold their motto of “Loyalty-Pride-Tradition.” While I’m certain a home game would be filled with even more energy, I felt very proud to be sitting alongside Galaxians at an away game.
