May: Celebrating Cinco de Mayo and Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Happy Cinco de Mayo!  This year most family celebrations have taken place yesterday, May 4.  But if you still want to enjoy the holiday, the city of San Bernardino is hosting a free public celebration  from 11am to 3pm at Placita Park, 685 N. Mt. Vernon Avenue.

Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage is celebrated throughout the month.  One of the best places for families and children are the county libraries, especially in LA and San Bernardino Counties.  Check them out!

For example, the La Verne Public Library is hosting artist Isaku Kageyama for an in person presentation on taiko drumming.  Saturday, May 11, 11am to noon.  You will need to register at      https://visit.lacountylibrary.org/event/10711339

And the Chino Branch Library in San Bernardino County is offering a free “Special Storytime Celebrating Asian American Heritage Month” on Monday, May 6 at 4pm.  The library is at 13180 Central Avenue in Chino, Ca.

Naomi Hirahara is a favorite story teller, with her mystery novels featuring Asian American protagonists in contemporary Asian American communities and  postwar California and Chicago.  If you are in Pasadena, she is offering an in person talk about her recent childrens book, A Child’s Introduction to Asian American and Pacific Islander History. At Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena, May 18, 1 pm.
