In October 2023, I embarked on a new chapter of my life, stepping into my first job in years at the 99 Cent Store. It wasn’t where I had imagined myself, but life had taken unexpected turns, leading me to this point. Dealing with health issues and the loss of my grandmother had left me emotionally drained and financially stretched. Desperate for stability, I committed to six months at the store while keeping an eye out for better opportunities. My role as a recovery associate was physically demanding, exacerbating my already troubled knees.
Yet, amidst the challenges, I found camaraderie with my coworkers, who became pillars of support during my time there. But as the months passed, ominous signs began to emerge – dwindling shipments, reduced hours, and whispers of closure.
In March, the news hit us like a blow: all 371 locations of our store were shutting down. Speculations abound, but the underlying cause was clear – insurmountable debt inherited from previous ownership, compounded by the economic fallout of the pandemic and logistical challenges.
As the store’s demise drew near, I grappled with uncertainty about the future. Hours were slashed, leaving me with dwindling income and mounting worries. Yet, amidst the chaos, I found solace in connecting with our customers, many of whom shared similar struggles with financial instability. Now, as the shelves grow emptier and the inevitable closure looms, I reflect on the bonds forged and the resilience discovered amidst adversity.
The 99 Store may soon fade into memory, but the lessons learned and the friendships made will endure. As I navigate the uncertain road ahead, I’m reminded that endings often herald new beginnings. Though the path forward may be unclear, I hold onto hope and resilience, trusting that the next chapter will bring opportunities for growth and renewal.

I found out today that my last day is May 11 and that our store is closing on Mother’s Day on the 12th.
